With An Almost Four Percent Drop In Active Voters, Non-Partisan Still On Top

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – September 13, 2024

With the switch to the top-down voter registration system and a major voter roll maintenance taking place, the secretary of state delayed release of August numbers; they checked and double-checked to ensure accuracy, finally  posting on August 11th. The result of the maintenance effort was a drop of almost four percent (3.79%) in active voters. Party losses of actual voters and voter share reflect that.

Even with the adjustment, the trend remains unchanged. Non-Partisan voters are still the largest group of voters.

Decrease in Active Voters in Washoe and Rural Counties Impacts Voter Share

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – August 3, 2024

A loss of active voters in Washoe and the rural counties July, possibly caused by voter roll maintenance, allowed both the Democratic and Republican Party to gain voter share with Non-Partisan losing share. The same did not hold true statewide, in Clark County, and across the age demographics with both major parties continuing to lose voter share and Non-Partisan gaining. The Independent American Party also registered slight gains in voter share. How much of that was voters believing they were registering as independent (Non-Partisan) is unknown.

That did not alter the party standings; Non-Partisan continues to be the leading group of voters statewide, in Clark County, and among voters 18 to 54 years of age with the combined share of Non-Partisan and minor parties leading in Washoe. Those voters also continue to dominate in legislative districts. Non-Partisan is the largest bloc in over 50 percent of both state senate and assembly districts. When combined with minor party share, the share leads in just under 80 percent in the state senate and over 80 percent in the assembly.

Democratic Party Continues Voter Share Loss, GOP Not So Much

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – July 3, 2024

In addition to low voter turnout in the primary, June voter registration numbers continue to show voters abandoning both the Democratic and Republican Party with losses of the Democratic Party greater than losses seen in the GOP.  Among voters 18-34 years of age, Non-Partisan voter share is closing in on 50 percent, 60 percent when combined with minor party share.

Average non-major party voter share counties is now 33.45 percent, an increase of 0.18% from May.

With primary election turnout below 20 percent, it does not appear many voters took advantage of same-day voter registration to vote in the partisan races. (The report is not yet available) Where party membership is not required to vote in the general election, can we expect major party voter share to fall even more?

Primary Election Appears Not To Impact Voter Share Trend

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – June 3, 2024

Early voting is underway in this year’s primary election, however, as has been the trend in recnt past primary elections, May voter registration numbers show no impact in voter registration trends. With that said, in addition to Non-Partisan posting the largest gains in both voter share and raw numbers, the Republican Party gained slightly among voters 18 to 34 years of age and held even in Clark County and among voters over 55 years of age.

Non-Partisan continues to be the largest voting group in the state, in Clark County, and among voters 18 to 34 and 35 to 54 years of age. Additionally when combined with minor party registration, it is the leading group in Washoe County and is just under 56 percent of voters 18 to 34.

Combined NP / minor party is the largest group in Carson City

Average non-major party voter share counties is now 33.27 percent, an increase of 0.19% from April.

After one week of early voting, turnout is low. Will those voters not registered as either Democratic or Republican take advantage of same-day registration to vote in the partisan races? We will have to wait for the numbers at the end of this month.

Primary Election Appears Not To Impact Voter Share Trend

With early voting underway, it appears voters did not switch to a major party to participate in the partisan primaries leading up to the primary election.

February Voter Registration Shows Two Very Interesting Numbers

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – March 3, 2024

The voter registration numbers for February 2024 held two very interesting numbers. In CD2 the voter share of those not registered to either the Republican or Democratic Party, 37.48%, is only 0.37% behind the Republican share of 37.85% and in the assembly, Non-Partisan voter share became the largest bloc in 17 districts (over 40%), an increase of six from January.

With an increase of just over 4,000 active registered voters over January, it appears likely that many of those who changed party affiliation to vote in the presidential preference primary changed back to Non-Partisan

Republican Presidential Caucus Likely Cause of GOP Voter Share Increase

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – February 2, 2024

The Republican Party Presidential Caucus, with a January deadline to change party registration to participate, is the likely cause of an across the board increase in party voter share in last month. Democratic party voter share, despite the upcoming Democratic Party Presidential Preference Primary, fell along with Non-Partisan and minor party, the likely source of voters switching.

Not withstanding the Republican gains and Non-Partisan loses, Non-Partisan remains the largest bloc of voters state-wide, in Clark County, and among voters 18 to 54 years of age. Vote share of those not registered as either Democratic or Republican remains the largest group in Washoe County.

Annual Voter Share Change Shows Significant Major Party Loses; Non-Partisan Gains

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – January 4, 2024

With December voter registration numbers, it’s time to include the annual change in voter share. As expected, 2023 was not a good year for either major party as both lost what I consider a significant share while voters showed their apparent displeasure as evidenced by Non-Partisan and combined non-major party totals.  Among voters 18 to 34 years of age, the increase was over four percent (4.20% NP, 3.57% combined)

Voter Roll Maintenance Still Has Non-Partisan Voter Share Increasing

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – December 5, 2023

November saw counties perform voter roll maintenance, however, that did not change the normal trajectory; an increase in the percentage of voters registered as Non-Partisan and a decrease in share of the major parties. (Note, the GOP actually had a slight gain)

Non-Partisan remains largest group in the state, in Clark County and among voters 18 to 34 and 35 to 54 years of age. In Washoe County, the combined share of Non-Partisan and minor party leads both major parties. Among voters 55 years of age and older, Non-Partisan, while not ahead of either major party, continues to grow.

With two (2) months remaining for voters to register or change their registration before the presidential primaries; the Democratic Party will allow same-day registration, it will be interesting to see if the voter share numbers reflect interest in the primary process. Likewise, what will voter share changes look like leading up to the June state primary election.

Combined Non-Partisan and minor party Voter Share Tops 40 Percent As Non-Partisan Expands Lead

By Doug Goodman -Founder & Executive Director Nevadans for Election Reform – November 2, 2023

The percentage of voters not affiliating with either major party topped 40 percent in October as Non-Partisan increased its lead as the voting bloc with the largest number of voters.
