You say Ranked Choice Voting is easy. Why?

You say Ranked Choice Voting is easy. No. It’s the voters who use Ranked Choice Voting who say it is easy. In one survey:

  • 89% of respondents in RCV cities found the RCV ballot easy to understand

  • The strongest support for RCV came from respondents aged under 30 years (61%), with a family income under $40,000 (63%), and those who did not attend college (65%), as well as Asian (72%) and Latino (59%) respondents.

In another study:

  • 90% undersrtood the RCV process either perfectly or fairly well. Of those between 18 and 24 years of age, understanding was 100%. Those 65 years of age and older understood RCV the least, but still registered 76% understanding

  • Only 38% did not rank candidates. Of those only 2% did so because they lacked understanding

  • 95% found the RCV ballot simple to read

  • 76% were very confident or confident their votes would be counted accurately

  • 65% support the use of RCV

  • 51% would prefer the RCV outcome if the candidate who had the most first choice votes did not end up the eventual winner. Another 18% had no opinion

Ranked Choice Voting is about choices. We make choices every day. What are we going to wear? What are we going to eat? What tasks do I need to accomplish today? Often these choices require making a first or second choice or setting priorities. Imagine being able to extend this process to voting.

Currently when evaluating the candidates, voters may like one candidate over another but believe their first choice can not win so they don’t vote for their first choice. Now if we use our daily choice process for this decision, the voter can make their first choice for their preferred candidate and their second choice for the candidate they believe can win, or vice-versa. Simple. RCV is easy. That is why numerous businesses, universities, and private and political organizations use it. That is why several cities and counties use it. It is why five states allow their voters overseas to use it. It is why a growing number of state legislatures are considering bills to implement it. If it wasn’t easy, the Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences; The Oscars, wouldn’t uses it to award one of the most treasured prizes in entertainment.
